Policies
The principles we follow in publishing, peer review and handling your information. Individual journals may add their own requirements.
Publication ethics
We expect authors, reviewers and editors to act with honesty and integrity. Work must be original, accurately reported and properly credited. We are guided by widely accepted publication ethics principles, such as those published by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Peer review
Submissions are assessed by editors and, where suitable, by independent reviewers with relevant expertise. Reviewers keep manuscripts confidential. Decisions are based on quality and fit with the journal. Each journal states whether its review is single-blind or double-blind.
Open access and licensing
Each journal states its access model and licence, for example a Creative Commons licence, on its own pages. Authors are told the terms before publication, including what they may share and archive.
Originality and plagiarism
Manuscripts must be original and not under review elsewhere. Text, data and images from other sources must be credited. Submissions may be screened with similarity-checking software.
Authorship and conflicts of interest
Authorship is limited to people who made a substantial contribution to the work. Authors must declare funding and any competing interests.
Corrections and retractions
Errors are corrected through a published notice. Serious problems, such as misconduct or major errors, may lead to retraction, with a clear public notice explaining why.
